The Emerald Isle is home to numerous castles and other military strongholds, and when visiting Dingle where are several sites that castle fans shouldn’t miss.
Among the most notable is Rahinnane Castle, which today is just a former glory of itself. Located near Ventry, the ruins today are mostly accessible. The castle was the residence of the Knight of Kerry and it was the estate of the Geraldine family. Built on the site of an old ring fort, the castle was destroyed during the English Civil War.
Another property of the Geraldine family is the site of Gallarus Castle, and today of the three family estates is the one in the best condition. It is located on private farmland today and you’ll need to check to see if it is possible to visit. However, as for castles in Dingle, it is worth trying, especially for the 15th century tower. While a considerable portion of Minard Castle remains today, much of the castle was also destroyed during the English Civil War by Oliver Cromwell’s forces. It was built in the 15 th century on land that stretches out to the sea. It was the final defensive position of Anglo-Norman nobleman Walter Hussey, who had fled there with his men after the defeat of the Cavalier forces in England.
