There is a reason over 1.3 million visitors come to the  Art Gallery of New South Wales each year. Set within The Domain and overlooking beautiful Woolloomooloo Bay, the Gallery is one of Australia's leading museums of art and a Sydney institution, with five levels presenting a diverse range of art.  The permanent collection includes Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander art, from traditional works to contemporary indigenous works; Colonial & 20th-century Australian art; old European masters; Asian galleries and contemporary works.

In addition to the permanent displays, the Gallery presents a number of major temporary exhibitions. Check what's on before you visit to make sure you don't miss one of those highlights.

The museum itself is world-class with an excellent restaurant (open daily for lunch, 12pm-4pm, reservations recommended at galleryrestaurant@morsul.com.au) but visitors who arrive planning on spending an hour viewing Australian art will need to rethink their schedules. Tear yourself away from the beach, the shops and Sydney's other wonderful attractions to immerse yourself in Australian culture.

Free guided tours run daily.

Activities for children are held every second Sunday at 2:30pm. There are also children's activities during NSW School Holidays and a kids tour booklet available from the information desk.
