Port Douglas has a great annual community festival. For 10 balmy days and nights each May (May 19th - 29th, 2011), Carnivale takes over the village offering food, wine, music, culture, fashion, arts, sports, family fun and entertainment... and absolutely every reason you need to head to lovely Port Douglas!

Now 17 years old and recognised as one of the regions principal events, Carnivale has grown from a street fiesta to a broad and diverse program which involves the entire community. Managed by the Port Douglas Chamber of Commerce, Carnivale aims to give local community a chance to celebrate the end of the wet season and the beginning of the busy tourist season, while encouraging regional, national and international visitors to visit and take part in the jocular festivities.

Typical events include "Food, Wine and a Taste of Port" (a huge, fabulous seated event with food and wine stalls from over a dozen of the local award winning restaurants and live entertainment), "The Seafood Extravaganza" (held at the Marina), "Macrossan Street Parade" (with anywhere up to 50 community floats and a park full of kids rides and a sideshow alley), "Four Mile Beach Day" (a fun family day wth sandcastle building contests, treasure hunts, beach cricket and loads of other fun games and activities), "The Longest Lunch", "Food Fight" (Port Douglas top 8 chefs battle it out over hot stoves), "Palates of Port" (an 8 course degustation under the famous Fig Tree in Rex Smeal Park) and many many more.

The weather in Port in May is just gorgeous. Balmy cloudless blue sky days dissolve into tropical evenings with velvet starry skies, giving Carnivale-goers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the Carnivale tag:  "Taste Paradise". Accomodation can fill up quickly during Carnivale so get in early!
