To experience the visual art of Perth and beyond be sure to take a stroll in the Art Gallery of Western Australian. Founded in 1895, the gallery has grown over the last 110 years and now occupies the old Police Court building on Beaufort Street. Named the Centenary Galleries, this new building was dedicated in 1995. The gallery is open 10am until 5pm, 7 days a week. It is closed on Christmas and Good Friday, and is open from 1pm-5m on ANZAC Day. Admission to the gallery is free.
The Western Australian Museum is actually not a single museum, but rather is a collective of six branches that includes collections that are focused on the ecology, biogeography and evolution of life from the region, as well as the archeology, history and conservation of the Swan River Colony and nearby areas.
Perth is also home to the Western Australian Cricket Association (WACA), whose grounds in East Perth date back to 1893. This venue has played host to many state and national cricket matches, as well as other sports. There is even a WACA museum that houses a collection of cricketing memorabilia, and tours of the ground are also available. Consult the Web site for schedules of matches and other events.
