Everyone knows that New Zealand is famous for its wine industry, but most of the wineries are on South Island or elsewhere on North Island near Gisborne and Napier.  A good day trip if you're in the Rotorua/Bay of Plenty area is to drive over to several great wineries that are located along Highway 2 in the Tauranga area.  Mill's Reef has a beautiful new tasting room and restaurant that is located high on the bluffs overlooking the Bay of Plenty. Great views, great food. Morton Estate has a small tasting room located a bit further north with a cozy picnic area alongside. This makes a nice day trip along with visiting Tauranga and its shops, boutiques, restaurants, and bars.  Or make it a part of leisurely drive back to Auckland from Rotorua rather than the inland highways.  The drive through Karangahake Gorge is spectacular and there is a small winery with restaurant in the center of the gorge that makes a good rest stop for a meal or snack.
