We went trout fishing on Lake Rotoiti one morning and it was fantastic.  My wife and I are NOT avid fishermen - this was our first time in 10 years. Rotoiti is adjacent to Rotorua and supposedly a better place for fishing because the water is deeper.  This area of NZ and further south a bit is world renowned for its trout fishing.  Trout were supposedly imported from California in the early 20th century and adapted really well to NZ fresh water.  Charter a small fishing boat and guide for a morning and go out early.  We caught six huge trout - (2) eight pounders, (2) six pounders, and (2) four pounders within a three hour period. We had one of the fish prepared for our dinner by the chef in our hotel (it fed four people) and had the rest smoked at a smokehouse, vacuum packed, and shipped to us in the U.S. and to friends in Australia.  A once-in-a-lifetime experience for a non-fisherman and a really fun time.
