The Mondragon Palace
The Palace of Mondragon was built in 1314 by the Moorish king Abomelic, son of the king of Morocco, and has many Mudejar features and a beautiful garden overlooking the gorge. The municipal museum is located in this palace and has exhibits about the history of Ronda and the nature surrounding the town. After the reconquest, Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand lived there. The palace has been renovated several times after that by different rulers who lived there also.
Today the palace has beautiful Mudejar ceiings, windows, doors, and ceramic tile on the walls. The outer building dates from the 18th century only. There are two small towers that are beside the very impressive doorway to the palace.
The beautiful gardens remind one of the Generalife Gardens of Granada, in miniature. When one sits down in the garden, one feels at peace with the world. The gardens are the most beautiful feature of the palace.
