Nearly a century ago, skiing became a major part of the lifestyle and tourism pull in Zakopane. When the city was founded it was praised for its health benefits; the top quality air and pure water brought the spa industry and then tourists first to Zakopane. Now the two coexist along with many other activities that revolve around the Tatra Mountains.
Many claim Zakopane is the best ski town north of the Alps. The mountains are actually the world's youngest alpine chain. The ski industry is continuously growing in Zakopane and at present there are 50 lifts leading you to a plethora of great slopes.
There are five major ski resorts in Zakopane:
- Kasprowy Wierch
- Gubalowka
- Nosal
- Szymoszkowa
- Pardalowka

Hiking and even walking around in the Tatra Mountains is not only overwhelming, but also dangerous. The mountainous terrain and unpredictable weather require many specific precautions. Many people prefer to take guided tours and excursions to discover the landscape without the stress and fear of getting lost and overcoming unsurmountable paths.
