Hlavná stanica

(usually abbreviated as "Bratislava hl. st." or "Hlavná stanica")

is the main railway station for Bratislava, located in the northern part of broader city center. The station offers wide range of connections to Slovak cities, frequent connections to Czech Republic (2-hour intervals to Brno, Prague etc.), Hungary (2-hour intervals to Budapest etc.), daily connection to Poland (Krakow) etc. To get to Vienna you can use hourly shuttle service to Wien Hauptbahnhof station (see below). Facilities: There is a luggage storage service at the station (far left side of the main hall), open from 5:30am till 11:30pm (lunch break 12:00-12:30). There are also luggage lockers at the station (at platform 1). Free wi-fi internet access is available in the waiting room (on the 1st floor),

Public transport connections from Bratislava hl. st. railway station: To use public transport (DPB) in Bratislava, you have to buy your ticket prior to boarding (you can't buy it on the bus) from a machine or in the news booth. Ticket machines (orange boxes) accept only coins. You need a 60 minute ticket which costs 90 cents (you have to validate this ticket in the ticket marker immediately after boarding, with this ticket you can change means of transport within the time limit - 60 min, which during weekend extends to 90 minutes - you do not need to validate ticket again when transferring). To get to platforms of trams, take left exit from the station building. Platforms of buses/trolleybuses are located on the  right hand side as you walk out of the station.

Connections to:

City center (northern part) (~8  min): 

  • tram 1 (tram makes circle around the historic center with stops at Obchodna St., Kapucinska (northern entry to historic center), Most SNP (castle), Jesenskeho (square Hviezdoslavovo nam.), Námestie SNP (eastern entry to historic center),
  • or bus 93 and get off at second (Hodzovo nam.) or third (Zochova) stop,
  • or bus X13 and get off at second stop (Suché Mýto).

 City center (southern part) (~8 min): 

  • tram 1 (tram makes circle around the historic center with stops at Obchodna St., Kapucinska (northern entry to historic center), Most SNP (castle), Jesenskeho (square Hviezdoslavovo nam.), Námestie SNP (eastern entry to historic center),
  • or bus X13 and get off at stop Námestie SNP (third stop) or at terminus (for Eurovea/Sheraton).

Bratislava bus station (~10 min):  Trolleybus 210.

Bratislava airport (~25 min):  Bus 61.

Taxi services from Bratislava hl. st.: Note that taxis waiting at the lot are rather expensive (15 euro or more). Taxis called by phone could be cheaper (they usually use short numbers +421-2-16xxx (or 02-16xxx) - e.g. +421-2-16302, +421-2-16777, +421-2-16222, +421-2-16300, +421-2-16321 etc.). Alternatively, smartphone app Hopintaxi (iPhone, Android) can be used to call a taxi.

 

Shuttle trains Bratislava hl. st. - Vienna (~1 hour)

Bratislava - Vienna shuttle train 

Timetable of shuttle trains between Bratislava hl. st. and Vienna (main railway station - Wien Hauptbahnhof U1, also stops at Wien Stadlau U2, Wien Simmering U3).

Tickets: Ask for EUregio ticket, a discounted return (round trip) ticket: 

  •  for departures from Vienna, the  EUregio Bratislava - 16 Euro ticket is valid also as a day ticket for public transport in Bratislava, more information at OBB site
  • for departures from Bratislava you can opt either for normal EUregio Wien Ticket - 14 Euro - which does not include public transport in Vienna, or for EUregio Wien Ticket + Z100 - 18.80 Euro -  valid also as a day ticket for public transport in Vienna).
  • With EUregio ticket you can travel both by southern route (Bratislava-Petrzalka via Kittsee) or northern route (Bratislava hl. st. via Marchegg).
  • During summer it is better to take a place in the coach of  ZSSK - Slovak Railways (higher coach typically closest to the locomotive) which is air conditioned (coaches of OBB are not).

Some shuttle trains from Vienna main station (Wien Hauptbahnhof) also terminate at Bratislava – Petržalka station, located approximately 2 km south of city center. Currently the shuttle train to Vienna is the only connection from this station, for more train connections go to Bratislava hl. st. (main railway station).

Facilities: There is a luggage storage service at the station (far left side of the station hall), open from 04:15am till 11:45pm. There are also luggage lockers at the station.

 

Public transport connections from the station Bratislava-Petrzalka:

Connections to:

City center (~10 min): Bus 80 (stop is located in the front of the Bratislava-Petrzalka station building)

Main railway station (~15 min): Bus 93 direction Hlavna stanica (it is necessary to go to station's underpass under the tracks and then cross the street to get to the stop of No. 93)

Bratislava bus station (~35 min):  Travel to the main railway station and there take trolleybus 210. 

Bratislava airport (~50 min):  Travel to the main railway station and there take bus 61. 

 

Shuttle trains Bratislava Petržalka - Vienna (~1 hour)

  • Most of the trains from Bratislava continue from Vienna to Deutschkreutz, so do not worry if you see the train announced with final destination Deutschkreutz.
  • All coaches are air conditioned.
