The state of North Carolina is located in a temperate zone and generally has short, mild winters and long, hot summers. However, the state's weather does tend to vary a great deal depending on the region. The western part of the state, because it is in the mountains, has much different weather conditions than the east. There it can get much colder in the winter than in the eastern part of the state, whose average January temperature is in the 40's. During the summer months the western part of the state also stays much cooler than the east, averaging about 65 degrees in July and August.
North Carolina's eastern section and coast line are also prone to tropical storms and hurricanes. Those planning to visit this region during the hurricane season (June - November) are advised to check weather reports thoroughly before departing.
