Not too many know that southern California has some of the best whale watching in the world and harbors in Newport Beach, Dana Point and Long Beach are only 25 to 40 minutes away from Anaheim.  Many think about the winter season as the ideal time for the migration of the California Grey Whale, but the summer season has had a lot of blue whale sightngs in the last few years and has been surpassing the winter season.

In Newport Beach, Newport Landing Whale Watching and Davey's Locker Whale Watching  offer year round whale watching. View giant blue whales (Mid April-Oct) and grey whales (Dec-May).  Other varities of whales including  humpback whales, finback whales, minke whales, killer whales, and several other whale speciies can all be viewed year round.  Along with whales, over half dozen different species of dolphin some in pods number in the thousands are quite a sight to see.  Newport Bay is located on one of the largest Marine Protected Parks in Southern California.  The 14 mile long marine park system was put in place to protect this rich and unique marine ecosystem.   Short travel time to the water's outside Newport Bay where whale sightings occur.

Dana Point Harbor also has whale watching all year round. Between December and April gray whales are seen making their annual migration from Alaska to Mexico and back. During this peak season, 40 – 50 whales pass by Dana Point each day, using the Dana Point Headland’s 200-foot cliffs near the harbor as a landmark to check their migration path. The Festival of Whales, Dana Point’s most famous annual event, is a celebration of the annual migration of the magnificent gray whale. Blue whales, the largest animal in the world, are seen off Dana Point between May and October. Throught the year Dana Point whale watching excurstions see fin whales, minke whales, humpback whales and occassionally killer whales. Once in a while rare sightings of pilot whales, false killer whales, Bryde's whales, and more are also seen.
