Coming in and out of Aspen is not the most convenient of affairs, but scenic adventures generally are not expedient. Assuming arrival into the mountain town from out of state, Aspen offers minimal air service via Sardy Field, three miles outside the downtown. Flying from Denver to Sardy is a quick thirty minutes, service is offered ten times daily from United Express. It takes 4.5 hours to travel from Denver to Aspen by car, and while the road is beautiful, be prepared for winter driving conditions. The Eagle County Airport (EGE) is a quick hour and fifteen minutes to most areas in Aspen. Eagle is the third largest airport in the state and can accommodate aircraft as large as 757 direct from a number of major U.S. cities as well as international flights. The Vail/Beaver Creek Jet Center is an extensive and impressive FBO that is a compliment for Sardy Field and the Garfield County Airport (Rifle) for both space and adverse weather conditions. Aspen is worth the effort, the journey there is just part of the adventure.
Los Angeles and San Francisco tourists luck out, as UE also provides winter service directly to and from these cities during Aspen’s active winters. For visitors outside these select cities, however, flying into Denver or East County Regional Airport will be the only air options.
Eagle County Regional Airport is 70 miles away, Denver is 220 miles. The Car rental from one of the major rental companies in Denver would allow for a wonderful drive through nature along -70 West and Highway 82. There is limited shuttle van service offered in the winter and summer seasons available between Denver, Eagle and Aspen, car service or limo service allows the traveler to enjoy the views of the Glenwood Canyon and not worry about road conditions. The ride is a comfortable one, though be sure to have a winterized mindset: know your route and have a sturdy vehicle so as not to be stranded, lost, and helpless in a Colorado winter.
