The Belize Zoo is considered one of the best small zoos in the world.  Founded in 1983 by Sharon Matola, the 29-acre zoo houses only native Belize animals including the black jaguar, spotted jaguar, puma, margay, ocelot, jaguarondi, scarlet macaws, crocodiles, many snakes as well as the famous Baird's tapir named April.

An 84-acre Tropical Education Center is adjacent to the zoo, which you can hike or canoe through. This is a different kind of zoo. Most animals are in their natural habitat. The humans are carefully controlled and escorted.

The zoo opens daily at 8am and tends to close early - around 4pm, and they will be waving you out at this time which is feeding time!

A day trip from Ambergris Caye, this is as eclectic and natural a zoo as you will find anywhere.
