San Iganico, 70 miles from Belize City, is situated along the Macal River in the Cayo district of Belize. Across the river lies Santa Elena, the sister town, connected by Belize's sole suspension bridge, Hawksworth. Due to its location, San Iganacio offers a variety of water-based and hiking tours around the area as well as an array of cave excursions. On Main Street, the heart of San Iganicio's town, you will find numerous tour guide shops and depending on what you want to do, can choose an operator based on the particular excursion offered that day. For the relaxed-traveler, one option is to take a guided canoe tour along the Macal river and discover the various flora and fauna in the area. A stop at a butterfly sanctuary and a walk along a medicine trail is also included in the tour. For the more adventurous, there are numerous underwater caves in the area, which you can take a half-day tour. The Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) caves were discovered in 1989 and still contain numerous Mayan artifacts and extensive burial chambers. The Barton Creek cave is another alternative, although it is only accessed by canoe (which you remain in for the trip). A nearby watering hole and bar provides relief from the heat on a hot day.

Or hop in a "collectivo" Taxi  from opposite Belize Bank right in the heart of the town and head out to Bullet Tree Falls village for just $2. Just 3  miles out of town you're in a lovely Belizean village, right on the Mopan river - where you can really get a feel for local life. There are several very nice lodges where you can stop for lunch, plus there's horseriding  available and innertubing and canoeing along the river.
