getting around utila town is easy, there are only really two roads. all of the in town hotels and "tradewinds" and "paradise cove" rentals are on these roads. one road runs through the town center parallel to the water from chepes beach in the west out to the old airport/new "tradewinds" subdivisions in the east. the other road heads north from the center of town to the new airport. most places on these roads are within walking distance, those a little further apart can be reached via a tuk tuk taxi for $1-$2. most tourists/visitors never leave this town/road area and most tripadvisor reviews and forum posts only deal with this part of the island, to most tourists... this is utila. however, the other ninety percent of utila (not on a road) is the beautiful part of the island. only accessible by boat this other utila is just what you would expect of a caribbean island, deserted beaches that go on for miles, great snorkeling, small resorts and exclusive vacation rental homes. most people go to utila to get away from it all but end up never leaving town and never see the empty beaches and calm, clear azul waters.a town is a town is a town, if you really want to get away from it all and see the unspoiled caribbean, stay on the southwest or south shore (utopia resort, the pineapple house, sandy cay, the cabana at big rock etc.). alternately, hire a skipper ($40-60) and get out of town to a deserted caribbean beach and a beautiful vacation rental or resort for at least a day or two.
