Crafts are also another important part of Hawaiian culture and tradition. The lei, which looks like a flower or leaf and bead necklace, is an art form, and is an important part of Maui's history. A visitor to Maui is often presented with a beautiful and colorful lei upon arrival as a gesture of aloha.
The different cultures which have landed here make up the island's rich diversity. Various churches, missions and heiau (Hawaiian temple) are found around the island. Christian churches and Japanese missions can be found next to or across the street from each other. Visiting the Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens as you travel in or out of Iao Valley introduces you to the cultures which make up people here on the island of Maui.
