Meknes is not the best place to visit with the whole family, especially young children because it is spread out yet mostly walking and there are not many 'kid-friendly' amusemenets. However, two good places to visit with the family lie right outside of Meknes. For instance, the whole gang can visit Moulay Idriss which is a holy site where Moulay Idriss was born. Moulay Idriss was the creator of the first Arab Dynasty and thus the most sacred Saint. The town itself is a situated on a hill, nestled with white-washes building and holy buildings with stark, green roofs. The town is celebrated for its holiness and tourists should note than non-Muslims are not allowed to visit many of the sites that have strong religious significance. However, simply wandering down the labyrinthine streets is a treat for the family. Children will appreciate the tiny, narrow streets and some of the grander monuments. The shrine of Moulay Idriss in this city is a constant pilgrimage destination of many practicing Muslims.
Another good place to visit with the family is Volubilis where there are Roman ruins. It is quite magnificent to think how the Roman rule stretched this far into African terrain. The capital of the province during roman times was this mighty city. Here Romans produced wheat and olives between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. The city is located just 20 miles outside of Meknes so it makes for an easy day trip. The kids will love the various ruins. The best time to go is in the early morning or late evening, since the day can get very hot. In Volubilis, families should visit the Triumphal Arch, the Capitol, the Forum and there are also some mansions with mosaic floors. It is a great escape from Meknes for a day of relaxing with the family by picturesque ruins (kid-friendly!).
