Botswana is a beautiful country whose natural wonders have attracted some of the world's best wildlife and nature photographers. Their work provides a wonderful introduction to the country. Here are a few of the best:
The last two books, while covering other countries as well as Botswana, have some of the most stunning images ever produced of Botswana's wildlife and wilderness areas. Excerpts can be viewed on the author's website, http://www.poliza.de
Botswana is a bit off the beaten track, so the guidebook selection is slim compared to more well-known destinations. There's only one up-to-date guidebook which focuses exclusively on Botswana (the Bradt guide). Fortunately it's an excellent guidebook, and has tonnes of detail for people who are looking to learn about the country. It covers a wide range of options from budget travel to uber-luxury.
Lonely Planet has a guide which combines Botswana with Namibia. Like most Lonely Planet guides it focuses on the needs of the budget traveller.
Ian Michler's 'Botswana: An Insider's Guide' is a bit out of date in terms of practical information, but provides an excellent portrait of the country.
These books provide some insight into Botswana's history and culture, and will help to give you a sense of the country before you arrive.
Traveling in Botswana can be achieved on your own in national parks or by booking all-encompassing safaris with tour operators. These trips are guided and generally offer more remote experiences.
