SNUBA is like scuba diving minus all of the heavy gear. Snuba uses a special raft that holds a standard scuba air tank that floats on the surface. Snuba divers wear a very light harness with a scuba regulator that is attached to a 7 meter hose that attaches to the Snuba raft. Snuba divers can dive to any depth up to 7 meters. This is a good depth as light will still penetrate this deep and allow for good viewing of fish and marine life. Snuba diving on Phuket's reefs allows people who have never tried breathing underwater to get up close with the amazing tropical fish and coral that abound around Phuket.
Snuba does not require certification and can be dome by anyone 8 years old or older that has basic swimming abilities. Snuba does not pose decompression sickness (the bends) problems due to the shallower depths. However, all participants must participate in a 15 minute safety briefing to familiarize divers with several key safety factors. Overall, Snuba is a very safe activity that the whole family can enjoy.
Snuba tours from Phuket, Thailand operate at all of the major diving destinations around Phuket. Snuba tours in Phuket go to: Koh Ratcha Yai (Raya Island) and Koh Phi Phi. There are also beach dives that leave from Kata Beach.
For those interested in this fantastic, safe, activity, breathing underwater without all of the scuba gear, Powersnorkel is also available. This is exactly the same in operation as Snuba, only the names and companies are different. Air is supplied from a floating scuba tank at the surface down to 7 meters and breating is done via a standard diving regulator. Powersnorkeling has operated at beautiful Banana Beach, Coral Island for 7 years due to the perfect, unique operating conditions.
