The north in Argentina is a reallly amazing area where people usually spend a good time of their vacations. The worldwide famous Quebrada de Humahuaca, for instance and the Salt Flats are some of the attractions of the region but not all the little town has an ATMs. Salta is the most important city in the NW of Argentina and you can find easily a banks and Agencies for Exchange, even in the streets close to the Cathedral there are people changing, they are called "arbolitos" because as samll trees they are standing there the whole day. But outside the city there are a few places where it is possible to get money from the machines! In Purmamarca, Tilcara, Humahuaca or La Quiaca in the very north, for instance, and in the Calchaquies Valleys only in Cafayate and Cachi you will find at least one bank with this service. (ATMs)

It is good to know this and to have an idea of the amount of money you need for the days you will be in the area. Provide yourself with small notes of the official currency. Remember that the argentinian pesos is about a third of a dollar and indian people or artisans will always use this currency for any transaction. Only few cases they give you a price in dollars.

Anyway, if you go to Bolivia and still have some argentine pesos you can change in the border or spend them in the border, even in the bolivian side. If you go to Chile get rid of them, give a good tip to someone before leaving, because they are not accepted in that neighbouring country.

Hope to have helped someone with these few words. And Enjoy your stay in Argentina.
