Minsk boasts an extensive system of public transporation that includes buses, trolleys, trams and subway. They all run from 5:30 am to 1:00 am (the last run). You can purchase the tickets from the driver or, before boarding, in newstands or stores. One-way tickets cost 600 rubles or U$.40 (if you buy it on board it costs 650 rubles). It is advisable that you purchase a ten-day or monthly pass; there are two types: one can be used only on one type of transport and another one can be used on any ground transport, including subway. The first one costs around 10 000 rubles, the second one around 40 000 rubles (this cost is for monthly tickets: they are separate - a paper ticket and a plastic card for the Tube).
Be sure to punch the ticket when boarding the bus, trolley or tram, and first of all to buy it as you can be a charged a fine of 6 500 rubles.
The metro has an extensive network servicing the East, West and South East of the city. It comprises 19 stations distributed in two lines. Tickets are bought at the ticket vending machines insite the subway stations. As buses, the subway is a very popular means of transporation and in rush hours they are very crowded; they run more frequently, though, every three minutes (compared to 5-7 minutes the rest of the day)
TEMPORARY NOTE: Oktyabrskaya Station - the hub station connecting two lines is closed until September for overhaul. As a substitute they launched bus 33 from Victory Square to the Institut Kultury station which is by the way free of charge.
