While the city of Antigua is relatively safe it, and Guatemala itself, have had their share of problems with crime.  The most prominent types of crimes committed against tourists are robberies and petty thefts.  These tend to occur more often with tourists who tend to appear well off or who are traveling in expensive cars or with organized tour groups who may appear affluent.

If you are visiting Antigua it is best to try to appear to be of modest means.  Do not wear expensive jewelry or carry large amounts of cash.  Using a replaceable debit card, which can be cancelled if it becomes lost or stolen at no cost to you, such as an American Express Travelers Check Card, is preferable to using a credit card.  If you must travel with valuables, leave them in your hotel's safe, and do not engage in behaviors that could suggest that you may have large amounts of money, such as overtipping.

Backpackers should take care to make sure that their packs are locked at all times, especially while they are on their backs.  Men should not carry wallets in their back pockets, and women need to keep an eye on their bags at all times.  Be sure to carry the numbers of credit card companies and banks so you will be able to call if things do become stolen or lost.
