There’s a belief that all Ukrainian cities are unsafe but most visitors say this is an overstated danger. However, there are a few precautions you should take when traveling in Lviv.

First, be careful when crossing streets. This isn’t a threat to your safety from another person but from someone’s or bus. Streets here are pedestrian friendly, but cars often will stop and park in the middle of streets, but a car that looks parked to you might really be moving soon. There aren’t the same standards here that there are in other parts of the world to stop for pedestrians, so just keep that in mind as you travel around the city.

Second, if you are driving your own vehicle here, be sure to secure everything when you park and leave the car. Some locals recommend taking all your audio equipment with you if possible to avoid a break-in, but barring that, just be sure to keep all valuables out of sight and well secured. Anything that is meaningful or valuable, take with you, or better yet, don’t have it in the car with you at all.

Third, and this is important, stay aware of your surroundings. There is crime here; this is not a fully secure area, so always be aware of who is around you and what they are doing. Don’t immediately trust someone who claims to be police .. this is a common method of getting trust and then robbing someone. Ask for ID, or better yet, if you need police services, head to a police station yourself.

As long as you take these precautions, and the other generic traveler precautions you should always take, your safety should be preserved while traveling in Lviv.
