Izmir is an ancient city with historical roots dating all the way back to 6000 B.C.  This history is dotted with conflicts, including Balkan invasions of the area in approximately 1200 B.C.  It is also dotted with periods of great achievement, including fortressing of the area which took place during the Iron Age in the tenth century B.C.  Around that same time, the Greeks moved in to the area and there is much Greek mythological history associated with Izmir.

Although this time period is associated with much growth in the area, the time of biggest success for Izmir was the eighth century B.C. and the centuries just following it. During this time, the Ionians ruled the area, and Izmir was a stronghold of the history of their historical government.  After a few centuries of their control, Izmir was invaded by the Persians, beginning a period of quiet in the history of the area.  The city did not grow again until the third century B.C. when Alexander the Great began to take control of the area.  It then became a site of ancient Roman history.

Izmir ’s history as a Turkish city began in the eleventh century.   Izmir was first used as a base from which the Turks proceeded with further conquering of the area.   By the fourteenth century, it was a true Turkish city.   The modern city was built in the 1960’s and has been developing ever since.   Additional information about Izmir ’s history is available online at http://www.allaboutturkey.com/izmir.htm .
