Founded in 1850, the city of Colon was a town built out of necessity. It was actually founded as a railhead and port city on the Isthmus of Panama. First named Aspinwall, after one of the railroad company’s executives, the city was renamed Colon, in honor of Christopher Columbus, who arrived in this region during his fourth voyage in 1502.
The site of modern day Colon was only the domain of local wildlife until the California gold rush sent settlers westward, and thus created the need for a fast sea route from the West Coast to the East Coast of the United States. Thus the idea was to create a railroad that would run from Panama City to the eastern coast of Panama, and thus the city of Colon was born. The city grew in size, and attracted settlers from around the world. With the completion of the Panama Canal in 1913 the necessity of the railroad diminished, but Colon remains a fascinating city. Much younger than many other Latin American cities, it offers plenty of unique charms and seasonable weather year round.
