This page is designed to give an idea on how long it can take from your plane landing to getting to the city.

If you want to know all about airport transfers then please refer to the FAQs in the right hand panel of the Kuala Lumpur forum page, selecting FAQ Airport to City Transfers.  http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g29... Arriving and Departing in Malaysia is full of all the options to and from both of Kuala Lumpurs Airports.

Many people arrive into Kuala Lumpur with a long transit, want to pass time between flights rather than sitting at the airport.  Again if you read the FAQs in the right hand panel of the Kuala Lumpur forum page, selecting FAQ Airport Long Transits, there are some great suggestions, as well as a list of thngs in FAQ KL Popular Sights in the Sightseeing section.

But what are the practicalities of visiting the city if you only have a few hours?

KUL airport at Sepang is 55km south of the city.  The following information applies to both KLIA1 and KLIA2 terminals.

If you fancy going to the city how much time do you need?

It takes on average, 30-60 minutes to clear.  That is get off the plane, walk to immigration and get your passport stamped, walk to baggage reclaim and then clear customs.

The immigration hall at  both KLIA1 and KLIA2 can be very busy some times.  The immigration desks are split between desks for Malaysians and those for Foreigners. Even if the 'Malaysian Passport' gates have no queue then 'Foreigners' can not move to the Malaysian passport holder desks.  Each Foreigner will also have a scan taken of both index fingers, and this takes up around 10 seconds.  It can take up to an hour the pass through immigration at busy times.

If you are in transit, ie you do not need to collect your bags, it will take a little less.

Head to the to the Taxi Counter, tell the assistant where you want to go and the type of taxi you need, pay the fare and then follow the directions on the ticket.

It takes around 60 minutes to get from the airport to the city.

So from arrival to getting into the city will, on average, take 2 hours.

On the reverse, you need to be back at the airport before your check in desk closes.

Check in desks close promptly 1 hour before the flight leaves.  The minimum amount of time you need to be back at the airport would be 1 hour, but 90 minutes to 2 hours is better .

It takes 1 hour to get from the city to the airport.

So when heading back from the city you from leaving the city to your flight taking off you need to allow around 2-3 hours minimum.
