'Birds Without Wings' by Louie de Bernieres is great reading for anyone coming to Turkey.  The book depicts life in a small Aegean village during Ataturk's population exchange and is interwoven with actual Turkish history throughout the story.  

'Portrait of a Turkish Family' by Irfan Orga is a wonderful and very accurate family narrative.

'B-stard of Istanbul' by Elif Shafak is a modern, contemporary story with rich characters depicting life in modern Turkey.

'Bodrum - A Town in the Aegean' by Fatma Mansur is a doctoral thesis, one of the earliest accurate reflections of life in Bodrum inthe 1960s.
