All have both smoking and no smoking taxis as marked on the cars.  Taxis are easily caught at the airport or at any downtown hotel.  Outside the downtown area or major hotels, you’ll need to call.  Cabs are dispatched promptly but a major convention such as SXSW can put a strain on the system so you’ll need to plan ahead.  Drivers tend to be very polite and quite familiar with Austin.  Reservations can be made at most of the companies. 

The downtown area and the University are easily accessed by the free ’dillo system if you’re staying in the downtown area. If you want to go to the Wildflower Center or to a traditional mall, you’ll want a rental car. Parking is not a problem in most areas, especially if you’re willing to pay a small fee.   It is wise to make your car reservation before arriving in Austin.  There are times when conventions and large gatherings empty the rental car inventories and you’ll be faced with large fee for a short time at one of the local agencies.
