The Theatro Municpal is Rio's main performing arts venue.  Throughout the year the theatre hosts many performances including plays, operas, symphonies, and dance performances.  The theatre also has a ballet company that calls the building home.

Many cultural performances are also held at Rio's Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB).  The building, a former bank headquarters, was renovated to become a cultural center in the 1980's.  The center hosts visiting dance and music performances, plays, and art exhibits.  It  also has a movie theatre, a cafe, and a bookstore.
