Brazil has the reputation of being a very dangerous destination. Tourists feel insecure about travelling to Brazil and the media is to be blamed for much of that feeling. Brazilian big cities, such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Salvador da Bahia may have unsafe areas, but the rest of the country is very safe in general terms. Gramado is a totally safe destination. Crime isn't something to worry about when visiting southern Brazil.

On the health sector, both Gramado and Canela are served by small and clean hospitals that can help you in case you have some regular travelling health problems. However, if the problem is serious you will have to be transported (by ambulance or air) to one of the largest cities: Caxias do Sul (80 kms), Porto Alegre (120 kms) or Novo Hamburgo (80 kms). Be sure that your health insurance covers for such an event, because if you are not covered the prices will be very surprising.
