Birmingham offers four distinct seasons to residents and visitors and is one of the few cities in the United States that follows the 'earth science calendar' - meaning it has four seasons of almost equal length starting in March, June, September and December.
According to the solar calendar, Spring begins on March 21 and indeed Birmingham's beautiful Spring season usually starts then (or maybe a week or two before this). Highs are in the 60's in March warming into the 70's in April and 80's in May. Early flowers begin to show in March and various plants blossom throughout the season....Spring lasts a full three months with the weather gradually getting warmer until mid-June (when our friend the sun says that Summer begins with the Summer Solstice on June 21). I recommend a visit during the spring because of the temperate climate and beautiful azealeas and other flowering plants and trees. Fast moving storms can bring rain though, so bring a rain jacket because you may need it...
In mid-June- for the next three months, the stereotypical hot and humid summer is in full swing. Frankly, this is not a good time to visit unless you are accustomed to a full blown sub-tropical climate, as Birmingham is much like Florida in the summer months. Actual weather records indicate the average daytime high in Birmingham is about 90-91 degrees and it is indeed a rare event to see the needle pass 100. This is in contrast to Texas where 100 degree days are quite commonplace in the summer. But, heat is heat and mid-afternoon thunderstorms keep the humidity high. Frankly residents here are delighted when mid-September comes and along and beautiful Fall season begins. (The earth science calendar says Fall starts on September 21)...
Fall (especially October through mid-November) is characterized by decidedly lower humidity with deep blue skies on many days that will remind the visitor of the western U.S. This is the dry season and beautiful fall colors reminiscent of New England appear in mid-to late October. If you want to visit this part of the country, Fall is the ideal time. Golf courses are still green and the putting surfaces are fast and true. A light sweater is all you would need in the evenings. This weather lasts until past Thanksgiving and winter begins sometime before Christmas....
Winter lasts from mid- December until the first week of March. The average high in Birmingham in the middle of January is 54 with the average low around 31 degrees. On warm winter days, golf or tennis are fun outdoor activities and all golf courses in the city are open 12 months a year. Winter can be rainy however as cold fronts that bring snow to the midwest dump the clear liquid precipitation our way. So bring a decent jacket that is rainworthy if you visit the city in the winter. Meaningful snowfall is unusual. The last one inch snowfall in Birmingham occurred in 2001.
