The story of the region of Tortuguero is as much about the animals who lived there as the various peoples. And of course this “Region of Turtles,” as its suggests, is home to a variety of these huge sea creates. Carl Safina’s “Voyage of the Turtle: In Pursuit of the Earth’s Last Dinosaur,” chronicles the animal and devotes a major portion of his research on the efforts made in Tortuguero to help maintain the population. Likewise, James R. Spotila’s “Sea Turtles: A Complete Guide to Their Biology, Behavior, and Conservation,” is an excellent source on the subject for anyone with an interest in the species, and will help you better understand their habits if you arrive for the famous mating season. The area is discussed in Marcelino Mata Madrigal’s “Tortuguero Natural,” which offers information on this most important natural park and wildlife preserve in Costa Rica. And the region’s unique history, and how man was once very much at home in this paradise is told in “A Forest of Kings: The Untold Story of the Ancient Maya,” by David Freidel and Linda Schele.
