A breakdown of what one can expect when visiting Mal Pais.
DO EXPECT a tropical beach town that is the perfect blend of jungle, nature and great waves, with plenty of great food, services and activities
but remote enough and rustic enough that you know you went someplace !
EXPECT to be able to explore and find beaches with no one else on them.
EXPECT to find a great massage or spa treatment on the beach.
EXPECT to find gecko poop on your clothes, bed,or food. Yes, these tiny little lizards are in the best hotels and houses.
EXPECT to find several good restaurants.
EXPECT the dusty, bumpy roads.
EXPECT to find surfing and surf lessons for those 10 and older.
EXPECT that you will need a rental vehicle to really see this area. (preferrably 4wd)
EXPECT that if you decide to walk it will be hotter and dustier than you imagined.
EXPECT to meet people from all over the world Many europeans, South Americans, North Americans reside and work in this village.
EXPECT that if you get angry because the internet doesn't work, electricity goes out, service is slow, people don't speak English(gotta love that one) or darn it I paid_ for this hotel and _doesn't work, that you won't like Mal Pais.
EXPECT air conditioning only in the bedroom of your hotel or rental..No air conditioned restaurants or public spaces.
EXPECT that if you love nature, know how to
go with the flow, appreciate the things you have, and can laugh when
things don't work like they do back home, that you will most likely not
only LOVE Mal Pais but will probably want to sell everything and move
Mal Pais isn't for everyone. Which is great because everyone can't fit. It's a land far away that works at it's own pace. Some can see beauty like they've never seen it anywhere else, and others are left wondering what all the fuss is about. Mal Pais is a special place and it is truly one of the final frontiers!
If you do visit, please respect the place and the people. This is not an ordinary vacation destination. It's still rugged, real, natural, and beautiful. Mal Pais is unique and those that are ready will find a place they probably didn't believe still existed!
