With its rich cultural history, it should come as no surprise that San Jose hosts a number of museums.
- Museo de Arte y Diseno Contemporaneo -- this museum feautures works of art from a number of Costa Rican and Central American artists. The huge complex also houses several performing arts spaces. Located at Calle 13, the museum is open Monday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (free admission), and Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. General admission is $2, students with ID, 300 colones. Children and seniors gain free admission.
- Museo Nacional de Costa Rica -- this museum features collections focused on the country's history. A number of historical and archeological objects are on display. Located at Calle 17, the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults, students with ID $2.
- Museo de Arte Costarricense -- this small museum celebrates Costa Rica's famous artists. Located at Calle 42 and Paseo Colón, the museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, free for children and students with ID. Admission is free for all on Sunday.
- Museo de Jade -- this museum features an all-encompassing collection of jade and objects made of jade. A number of pre-Columbian artifacts are on display as well. The museum is located at Avenida 7 in the INS Building, and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults and free for children under the age of 12.
- Museo de Ora Banco Central -- this museum has an extensive collection of gold pieces from the pre-Columbian era. In addition, exhibits focus on the production, function, and use of these objects. The museum is located at underground at the Bajos de la Plaza de la Cultura, and is open Monday to Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for students with ID.
