The visitor center is excellent.  Go early (like 9 am) to avoid the crowds.  Then hike up the western side of the glacier which takes about 3 hours and ends up at a point which overlooks the glacier.  This offers a better perspective of the glacier than from the visitor center.  Take lunch.  You will probably have the view to yourself.
