No visit to YAP is complete until you see the history of the Island. The Germans, Japanese and then the Americans held title to this tropical paradise until the Federated States of Micronesia was formed. SInce then, YAP has grown into a diver's dream with its unspoiled waters and giant manta's.  The Island has retained its traditional culture which is found throughout the Island villages. When visiting YAP, one area of historical interest is the old YAP airport shown below.

Local tour guides are available to show you the way as some of the treasures are hidden beneath the jungle and a bit hard to find on your own. Nevertheless, if your an aviation buff, or just an adventure seeker, the experience is memorable and very worth while. Keep in mind when exploring the island, all land is privately owned and you MUST ask permission to enter or cross anyones property. Its best to carry a small local leaf or flower in your hand as a sign of goodwill. (A local custom) When indoubt, ask and offer to pay a small fee, say $2-$5pp to the landowner. The folks here are very friendly and welcome tourists to visit their attractions.

So what can you see during this aviation adventure? Here's a few shots of the wreckage left over from WWII ....

More modern than WWII, but take a look at the Continental Airlines airplane that missed the runway by just a few feet in this picture! Don't worry however, this was a "one-of" and the safety record since then is 100%.
