One should not sacrifice seeing Soweto since it is an important monument in history. However, there is no denying that the area is still very dangerous and one must be precautious. However, despite Soweto’s terribly high crime rate, most visitors to Soweto come and leave without encountering problems. Of course, it is largely because one must take caution when traveling around Soweto and generally, tourists are traveling in well protected groups. One of the most prominent danger to your personal safety is on the roads, since drinking and driving is a big problem in South Africa. Also, on the streets, one should not wander alone. To be safer, one should try to dress down and inconspicuously. It is not wise to carry a camera dangling on ones neck or other obvious indications of being a tourist. One should also keep a mental inventory of their valuables at all times and remember to keep off any ostentatious jewelry. Passports and wallets can even be carried inside ones clothes for safe keeping. If one has a bag, one should carry it under ones arm and not dangling nonchalantly. Also, one should avoid large crowds of strangers. Most importantly one should be careful about the areas one enters and make sure they know the way around or has a contact if they do get lost.
