Yossi’s is a day night café in a restored house at 127 Helen Joseph Road, Glenwood. The blend of furniture, couches and Persian rugs spills out onto the pavement with live jazz music on Wednesday nights. The food is a mixture of Moroccan, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes with emphasis on social eating. You can chill on a couch on the veranda and enjoy a hookah pipe with Turkish coffee or their house special Turkish Tiger shooter which is a condensed milk based nightcap. Euphoria is an eclectic selection of shops in one quaint house at 134 Helen Joseph Road. Each room offers something different – Last Chance Books is a second hand bookstore, Just Jackets boasts custom painted vintage jackets, Fuzzy Collection sells clothing, accessories and décor and at the back of the building there is a hairdresser and beauty salon. Euphoria’s restaurant, Star Café occupies one indoor room as well as the balcony and garden. Enjoy dinner while listening to live music every Tuesday and Friday night. The Corner Café is a funky little eco-restaurant and coffee bar which is a must see! You can find it on the corner of Brand Road and Cromwell Street in Glenwood, within walking distance from Helen Joseph Road. Corner Café grow their own herbs, use organic where possible, make their own water out of air, use dolphin friendly detergents, utilise wind power, have a large worm farm and recycle all their waste. “Just ordinary people trying to save the planet one cappuccino at a time”. Their menu includes healthy sarmies, wraps, pizzas, soups and daily specials that are made with veg in season and freshly squeezed juices. The coffee is exceptional and Corner Café won the award for the best coffee in town in 2008. Earthmother Organic runs an all organic shop from a lovely old house at 106 Bulwer Road in Glenwood. Their shop has more than 700 organic items including cosmetics, dried food, fresh produce, diary, luxury items, drinks, baby food and much more. Their café and coffee bar is outside in the garden and is the closest to an organic café you will find in Durban. The food and cakes are an absolute delight and a pleasure for all palates. All the coffees and teas are organic and they will place a mark next to anything on the menu that is not organic. Three rooms in the house are occupied by local shops selling jewellery and clothing. KZN Society of Arts Gallery & Arts Café is a must visit for all art lovers. The large gallery exhibits world-class art and forms part of the KZNSA shop which sells a variety of locally produced goods, hand-made and recycled crafts. The Arts café is also on the premises.
