Both taxis and rental cars are readily available in the Mar del Plata area, and are both good ways for getting around.
Mar del Plate encompasses a relatively small area, making many places accessible by foot. However, certain areas are too for from one another for walking, and alternate forms of transportation should be considered.
Taxis are great for getting around the city area. They are comfortable, convenient, readily available, and because of the city’s small size, are generally inexpensive. The best way to get taxi transportation is by calling for a ride (see the Taxi Company List), going to an official taxi stand, or asking restaurants, bars, or hotels to arrange for a pick up. Hailing a cab in the street is possible, but not the safest method. Fares are based on meters that charge an initial fee, and then add cost based on distance and time spent traveling.
Even though they tend to be expensive, a rental car is the best option for exploring areas outside of Mar del Plata. Before deciding on this mode of transportation, check out the Driving in Argentina page. Although most areas are accessible by bus or train, having a personal vehicle provides much more freedom and flexibility. There are numerous rental car companies located around Mar del Plata as well as Buenos Aires (the location which many visitors fly into). Check out this Car Rental Company List for more information.
