Throughout the year there are many events and festivals held in Mar del Plata.  Some of these are unique to the city, while others are celebrated in all of Argentina.

The biggest and most anticipated festival held in Mar del Plata every year is the International Film Festival .  Held during one week in March, this event draws crowds from not only Argentina, but from all over the world.  1954 was the first year of this event, and since then it has gotten bigger and more elaborate every year.  Throughout the week, there are many of film screenings held in various locations.  At the weeks end, awards are handed out to the best films in various categories.

The New Years celebration held in Mar del Plata is great fun.  Unlike in the northern hemisphere, the weather is warm during this time of the year, which allows tons of people to bring their celebrations outdoors, to the beaches and in the streets.

Argentina’s Independence Day is on July 9th.  This is a public holiday throughout the country.

Buenos Aires is only a half hour plane ride and four hour drive from Mar del Plata.  Certain events and festivals held in this city are worth the commute.  For more information, check out the Buenos Aires Annual Events Calendar .
