Tombstone, "The Town Too Tough to Die," began as a mining claim and turned into a boomtown settlement in 1877. However, the town is most well-known for its days of Old West lawlessness that culminated in the shootout at the OK Corral between Wyatt Earp and the Clanton Gang.
The major industry in Tombstone since its inception was mining, and many fortunes were made during the heyday of its silver and gold mining days. During World War I, the mining of manganese helped support the war effort, and during World War II, Tombstone contributed to the effort through the mining of lead.
When extraction of minerals no longer was a lucrative industry, the town fell back on its Old West days, and now tourism is the major industry that keeps the town's coffers full, with historical reenactments being the major draw.
