Santillana del Mar is easy to reach by both car and bus.

By Car

From Asturias and west of Santillana, the best approach is via the A8 motorway, exiting at the Puente San Miguel/Santillana del Mar exit.  Previously this involved going through the town of Puente San Miguel, however there is now a new road which avoids this (signposted Santillana del Mar).

From Santander/Bilbao and east of Santillana take the A67 motorway towards Torrelavega, exiting at the Suances/Santillana del Mar exit.  From here there is a short section of the N611, before turning off towards Santillana, with traffic for Suances turning off in the other direction.  Be aware that in the height of summer there can be congestion here due to the beach traffic heading for Suances at peak times of day.

From Madrid/Palencia and south of Torrelavega take the A67 motorway towards Santander, pass Torrelavega, and take the Suances/Santillana del Mar exit off the A67 as before.

From the coast (Comillas, Suances etc), follow signs to Santillana del Mar, be aware there is now a new road system around Santillana, with a ring road, and a new road connecting Santillana with Suances.

Parking

There are two large car parks in Santillana, with one complex next to the tourist office and signposted off the CA131, coming from the A67/Suances, and another on the CA133 coming from the A8.  This second car park does charge during summer months and weekends, but not always during the winter.

Altamira Cave

The Altamira Cave is signposted off the CA133 just before entering Santillana.

For further information in English and maps etc. see the town hall's website: http://www.santillanadelmarturismo.co...

By Bus

Santillana is served by buses from both Santander and Torrelavega bus stations, as well as having bus links with other touristy towns such as San Vicente de la Barquera and Comillas.  La Cantabrica bus company runs various buses daily from Santander, also stopping in Torrelavega (at the FEVE station, NOT the bus station), Puente San Miguel, Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera amongst others.  A more frequent service is available from the bus station in Torrelavega operated by Turytrans bus company, running more or less direct to Santillana.  For details see: www.transportedecantabria.es

Altamira Cave

Some (not all) of the buses run by Turytrans from Torrelavega do go on to the village of Herran, the closest to the cave.  The stop is in the centre of the village, and the cave is a short walk further on. These stop in Santillana first, so it is possible to get from Santillana to nearly the caves by bus.

By Train

There is no train station in Santillana del Mar, however it is possible to catch the FEVE train to either Puente San Miguel or Torrelavega and take a bus on from there, see above.  For FEVE train times see: www.feve.es
