The beach is glorious! We had a marvelous day down at Seagrove park. The sun was out, temperature in the mid 70's and dolphin's frolicking in the waves. We traveled here several times, and finally moved here in 1999. I have to admit that the dolphins are not the most frequent site, however not infrequent. We love jogging and hiking at Torrey Pines, which is a unique state park, on bluff's above the ocean. Del Mar is also known for its horse racing, and the season is in the summer; July - August for ~ 6 weeks. The track is a definite must if you are in town during the summer. Also, let's not forget the "San Diego" state fair, held at the Del Mar Track. Also, fun if you are into that type of destination. Overall, Del Mar is a low key town, with a little village filled with mediocre restaurants in a beautiful setting. If you are looking to experience a relationship with the outdoors and the ocean, this is one of the most beautiful spots in San Diego, if not the west coast.
