Denver is a very car heavy city.  Public transportation is availible but not enough to make it easy and simple to get around.  If you stay in the downtown area most things are in walking distance.  You can also take advantage of the light rail and the free shuttle on the 16th street mall however getting to the outter reaches of the large city will require a bus map or a rental car.
