Mystic Seaport provides many exciting activities for visitors. There are many docking spaces at their marina, which means guests can arrive by private sail or motorboat. It is recommended that only experienced sailors do this, however, as the channel leading into the port is narrow and bordered by shoals. If you wish to take advantage of this program, make reservations in advance (as this option is quite popular) and arrange to arrive after 12:40pm and leave before 12:40pm.

People without private boats or sailing experience can still enjoy the waters by taking a cruise on one of the historic ships. The Sabino, Breck Marshall, Resolute and Araminto offers half-hour or 90-minute cruises during the summer. Visitors can also choose to rent a sail or rowboat and take to the Mystic River by themselves. These activities are generally offered daily between May and October from about 10am to 5pm, and some boat rides require museum admission on top of an extra fee.

Besides Mystic Seaport, there is another harbor in town called Mystic River Marina, Inc. on Mason Island, which can accommodate ships up to 150 feet in length. This marina also offers a service and parts department, as well as a store for various boating needs. A few companies such as Blackhawk Party Boat and Mijoy (both located in nearby towns) also rent boats and fishing equipment.

There are not a lot of sports and recreation facilities in Mystic itself. However, many beaches, golf courses, parks and nature trails can be found in nearby towns.
