Lovers Key State Park is a nice spot and just south Ft Myers Beach, an easy 45 minute drive.
A great day trip for those who would like to see "the Everglades" but don't have a lot of time is to drive to the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary . It's about a 2- 3 hour ride that can be looped with a short visit to Naples to make a full day excursion. Corkscrew is one of the oldest and largest Audubon centers in the US and features a facinating elevated trail into a majestic swamp that has some of the oldest Cypress trees in the world- many older than 1000 years old. The loop takes about an hour and winds through a variety of sections including deep wood and open water views. Definitely worth the ride. Stop in Naples on the way back and walk down 5th Ave to window shop and have dinner and you've had a great day!
Closer still, are the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium on Ortiz just north of Colonial Blvd. and west of I-75 and Six Mile Cypress Slough, with a boardwalk and interpretation center, accessible off of Six Mile Cypress/Ben C. Pratt Drive on the eastern edge of Fort Myers. Both facilities feature walking and museum tours of the western Everglades ecology.
For a long, but very different option, try the Key West Ferry for a day trip to the island of Key West. It sails from Ft Myers Beach and takes 3.5 hours each way. You can also stay overnight and take a day trip by boat or seaplane out to Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas and the finest snorkeling in the Continental U.S.
Another day trip is the Everglades. There are tours from Sanibel or drive it yourself. It about 2 hours away. Totch's Island tours are available and many places offer airboat trips into the glades. The 10,000 islands boat cruises leave from Everglades City.
