Covington was founded in the early 19th Century, named for a hero of the War of 1812, General Leonard Covington, who was a close friend of land owners in the area. After the town's official founding, land parcels were auctioned off to the public as a way to increase its population. The rich land land along the Ohio River sold quickly, and by the 1840's the city was a booming manufacturing town with over 1500 residents.
Over time the city continued to grow as more factories located there, people moved to the city to get jobs and the town continued to acquire more land outside of its city limits. Covington's growth was also helped along by being located across the Ohio River from its larger neighbor, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Today Covington is both a bedroom community of nearby Cincinnati and a destination unto itself. It is home to several corporations and attracts large numbers of business travelers to its hotels and convention facilities each year because of its easy access to the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport.
