The hills of Lexington offer four fairly pleasant seasons that include cool mountain breezes, warm but not hot summer evenings, and no major periods of heat, cold, rain, wind or snow. This doesn’t mean that you’ll get tired of the generally fair and mild weather. The summers can be hot, but generally the heat waves don’t stick around for long.

The spring can be especially beautiful but the colors of the flowers in bloom can be a bit much for those with spring allergies. So be prepared if you suffer from allergies and plan accordingly.

Many of the hotels in the downtown area offer specials throughout the year and New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day are two popular times, so plan on booking early if you’re thinking of heading to Lexington for those occasions.

The horseracing calendar is also full throughout much of the year, and the weeks leading up to the Kentucky Derby can result in higher priced accommodations. So again, book early.

And the holiday season is another magical time to be in Bluegrass country with the annual Southern Lights. Held at the Kentucky Horse Park, it is a festival of holiday lights, with a petting zoo, model railway, entertainment and crafts. Packages are usually posted in October. Call 800-568-8813.
