The Center for Maine History, now renamed the Maine Historical Society  is located at 489 Congress Street in the heart of Portland, Maine.  Surrounded by the restaurants and funky shops of Monument Square, the Maine Historical Society consist of three parts: the original and fully restored 1786 home of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (a National Landmark), a wonderful museum with  changing exhibits relating to Maine and the recently renovated state-of-the-art Brown Library.   Each is a gem in its own right. Additionally there is a museum gift shop with books relating to Maine along with fun gift ideas and souvenirs. and behind Longellow House is a stunning Longfellow Garden that is open to the public and free of charge.  The  Longfellow House docent tours last about an hour and extensively cover the Longfellow family history, Wadsworth's writing and life during the 1800's.  Tickets are purchased in the giftshop. The Museum is easily accessible and provides unique insight into historical topics relating to Maine.  Visit the institution online to learn more at www.mainehistory.org and check out www.mainememory.net to view online exhibits from around the state.
