Vineyard Haven itself is a fairly small area located in the center of Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard. However, to get around the island itself, you may want to use your own car. Cars cannot be transported aboard the Hy-Line Cruise ferries, so you may want to use the Steamship Authority ferries. During peak tourist season, it is advisable to make vehicle reservations at their online reservation site, since there are a limited number of automobiles they can take for each trip, and runs between Woods Hole and Vineyard Haven only number about half a dozen even during the summer.
Public transportation and auto, moped or bicycle rentals are also available on the island. Vineyard Transit runs a system of shuttles between Vineyard Haven, Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, West Tisbury, Chilmark, Aquinnah and Menemsha. The system runs every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas, but buses come with greater frequency between June and September. (usually once an hour for intercity routes and much more frequently for intracity routes).
